Discussion:
Screenshot tool under Linux

Does anybody know if there is a similar tool to MWSnap but for Linux?
Or how I could write such a tool using Free Pascal/Lazarus?

The feature I am really looking for is the "Any area" snap mode. When
you select that snapping mode, you can then draw a rectangle anywhere
on the screen/desktop and it will snap that rectangle to
file/clipboard.

At the moment under Ubuntu, I can take a full screen or full window
screenshot. I then need to open Gimp so I can crop the image to only
show the specific area of interrest. MWSnap with the "Any Area" mode
does all this in a single step.

KSnapshot can do it ;-)

The snapshot tool I have here on my Kubuntu system can do this... It's called
KSnapshot I think...

The vote is unanimous, KSnapshot it is! Gnome seems to be lagging behind! :-)

Thanks all!

Any idea how to remap the default screen capture application from
Gnome Capture to KSnapshot?

In the mean time I added KSnapshot launcher icon to the top Panel.

My cent of wisdom. Switch to KDE Desktop.

Since redhat 6.0 (which means a long time ago), with each new RH
release, I give a fair try to Gnome Desktop, which is standard for RH. I
use it for perhaps half a day, discover that most applications have
changed, that many have bugs, and that I miss a lot of facilities
available under KDE. Then I switch to KDE and forget about Gnome. I find
application consistency from KDE 1.0 to KDE 3.5, which have been
improved in the meantime, bug fixed, features added, etc. I know of many
Gnome users who switched to KDE, none which went the opposite way.

If you hit Alt+Print (I think it was Alt, perhaps it could also be Shift
or Ctrl) will make a screenshot of the selected window in the foreground
under Gnome. This is this very usefull and make a screenshot of a
special region redundantly for me.

But you can use Gimp, Gimp can also make screenshots from a special
region of your screen.

You can also make videos by using XvidCap. It can record a special
region of your screen. Works a little bit buggy, but it is very usefull
and works good.

...

Sorry, I haven't read carefully :).

If you use Compiz, you can press the 'Super'-key (it is the Windows-key
on most x86 PCs) and then select a region. This will produce a
screenshot of this region.
